Content

16 years old. Black or mixed race [half black]. Danielle and Isabella’s teenage cousin, on holidaying in Ghana for the first time for the family gathering. Tia arrives with all the confidence of a London teenager, quick, funny, flirtatious, fluent in a world her older cousins have half left behind, but underneath it she’s watching everything, trying to work out where she fits in a family and a culture she’s only ever known from a distance. She attaches herself to Danielle, and through that bond begins to absorb the weight of what it means to be a woman in this family. Tia sees the adults around her more clearly than they realise, and when the moment comes, she’s unwilling to play by rules she never agreed to.
