Trent is an intelligent, hard-working realist who has intentionally stepped away from social media, believing that technology has made people more connected on the surface while leaving them increasingly isolated in reality. He's observant, skeptical, and often dryly funny, but emotionally guarded.
Beneath his rational exterior is a deep fear of rejection and loss, shaped in part by the death of his father. His fear of losing the people closest to him can sometimes manifest as controlling behavior, even when he doesn't recognize it in himself.
When a wildly popular new app begins consuming nearly everyone around him—including his longtime girlfriend, Clarissa—Trent becomes determined to understand what is really happening.
