Cost of Living

TV Greater London Apply by 29th August 2026, 17:00
Content
Japanese series exploring the global cost of living crisis.

While Japan is often seen as an economic powerhouse in the West, the nation currently faces economic challenges due to two decades of near-zero interest rates, which have led to a historic low for the yen. As a result, stagnant wages and increasing import costs have significantly reduced consumer purchasing power when compared to global standards, making ordinary Japanese citizens feel poorer than ever. Currently, the minimum wage in Tokyo stands at 1226 yen per hour—approximately £5.70, comparable to the UK's minimum wage 18 years ago.

In each episode, the series visits a different country to meet people from diverse backgrounds, exploring how they earn and manage their finances. The show examines the obstacles they encounter, the solutions they've implemented, and any potential lessons the Japanese audience can learn from their experiences.
