Caelum is learning how to grieve. Darkus wants to outrun his feelings. Stella can’t contain her’s. And Aurora is planning the perfect funeral. Everyone in the Darkness and the Light is learning to deal with feelings bigger than themselves, nebulous emotions that feel like they’re being beamed from out of this world.
We experience all of these journeys through Caelum, who is connected to the other characters through light, be it photography or his eventual obsession with celestial phenomenon. It functions as a connection back to the title itself which is a metaphor for the grieving process; a kind of ying and yang, in that it’s not about binaries, but exploring emotions that feel amazing and awful all at once, an analysis of the bad in the good and the hope within desolation.

Years ago when Caelum lost his grandfather, who functioned as a connection to his ethnic roots, he didn’t allow himself to mourn. And in the present Caelum finds himself confronting that once more when someone close to him dies. This sets him on a journey of self-discovery and collision. The latter of which proves more painful, but ultimately vital for life in a galaxy like ours.

Dates

The Darkness and the Light will be a part of Lambeth Fringe 2026 at The Bread and Roses Theatre on the 10th and 11th of October. We would be running rehearsals during September and October so actors would need to have significant availability during that time for rehearsals and prep.
