COLD BLOWS THE WIND
Independent feature film — now casting
Shooting in British Columbia, 15 August – 31 October 2026
Somewhere on the coast of British Columbia there is a cove. In that cove, there is a sailboat called Esperanto.
What happened there is disputed. Two old men will tell you one version, loudly, over the top of one another. A
father tells his daughter a gentler one. A woman writes it all down at night and is not certain she believes a word
of it.
There is a mermaid in it. She is several hundred years old and she likes old black-and-white movies.
We are looking for faces with weather in them and voices with some mileage. This is a character piece before it is
anything else — long scenes, real silence, and very little explaining. If that is the work you like, we would like to
see you.
PLEASE NOTE: MIRA and LITTLE MIRA are two entirely separate characters who happen to share a
name. Little Mira is not a younger version of Mira and is not related to her. Please do not submit for both.

$200 CAD/day flat, all roles — leads and supporting alike. Ten-hour days, paid weekly. Non-union.
Milestone bonuses on top of your fee, tied to money actually arriving rather than paperwork being signed. On the
production’s receipt of distribution revenue, a bonus equal to one times your total engagement fee. On
recoupment of total production cash cost, a further two times. Full terms are set out in the engagement agreement.
Little Mira: maximum 8-hour days, per BC Employment Standards for performers under 12.

LOCATIONSVancouver, BC (Locarno Beach, False Creek, Vancouver Harbour) · Georgia Strait · Gibsons / Desolation Sound
area, BC · BC Ferry (Langdale route). Some work is outside Vancouver. Travel and accommodation details
confirmed on casting.
TO SUBMIT

MIRA — please include a brief and candid note on your open-water and cold-water experience, and any
freediving, monofin or breath-hold background.

THOMAS and WALTER, DEBORAH and HELEN — tell us if you are submitting as an established pair.

LITTLE MIRA — parent or guardian only. Send a recent photo and a short video of her talking about something
she likes. No performance necessary. Please don’t rehearse her or prepare anything — we’d rather see her as she
is.

Sides are released to selected submissions. Full script at callback under NDA.
Self-tapes due 7 August. Callbacks 9 August. THOMAS and WALTER open until filled.
We would rather see one honest read than three polished ones.

Content
Female, late 20s to 30s, playing ageless. Open ethnicity. LEAD.
She is several hundred years old and mentions it about as often as anyone else mentions their age. Asked directly,
she lies — smoothly, immediately, and well.
She is not tragic and must not be played tragic. Funny, impatient, jealous, and without a shred of
self-consciousness — she dances when she wants to dance, cooks, picks fights, and is not impressed by anybody.
Charm is the surface. It is not the note.
WATER: strong, confident open-water swimmer. Surf, underwater and cold-water work. Breath-hold comfort
essential. Prosthetic tail and performance work. Freediving, monofin or professional mermaid-performance
experience is a substantial asset — but genuine ease in cold open ocean is the non-negotiable, and it is verified
before callbacks. Please do not overstate it. We would far rather know now.
NUDITY: there is no onscreen nudity. A small number of mermaid sequences are written to imply it and are
achieved entirely through framing, water and camera angle — closed set, discussed in full in advance, covered at
contract. Intimacy in the film is limited and is staged with an intimacy coordinator.
