CASTING CALL – THE AFTER (Short Film)
Synopsis
The After follows Klara, whose life has ground to a halt after losing her mother. Struggling with overwhelming grief and the financial burden left behind by years of caring for her, she finds herself isolated and unable to move forward. The unexpected arrival of her childhood best friend, June, offers a brief escape from the weight of loss. As the two reconnect, old memories resurface and long-buried tensions begin to emerge. What starts as a heartfelt reunion gradually reveals itself to be something far more complicated, forcing both women to confront the lives they’ve built apart and the people they’ve become.
The film explores the quiet violence of stagnation. Rather than presenting grief as a single event, it examines the slow accumulation of ordinary moments that follow loss: unpaid bills, empty cupboards, unanswered messages, and the exhausting performance of convincing others that everything is fine. Alongside this sits June's experience of emotional suffocation within privilege-a different but very real kind of paralysis, hidden beneath comfort and expectation. Together, their stories ask how we continue living when identity has quietly slipped away.

Matthew Dovey is June’s fiancé. He works as an Econ professor at the University of Portland.
He’s been with June for the past 6 years and is ready to settle down and start a life with her. He proposed to her on Valentine’s Day,
and they’re set to get married in October of that same year, since his mother had been preparing for their wedding for years.
He loves June deeply, but doesn’t seem to fully understand the friction between her and his family, so when she suddenly runs away to England, barely a month before they’re supposed to get married, it takes him a while to realise it might have been something he/his family
has said or done that eventually pushed her away. - Salary
