While a recovering alcoholic JOAN tries to rebuild her relationships with her daughters, schizophrenia slowly takes hold of her life. The younger daughter ENYA tries to keep her distance, while the older, LOLA , does everything to save their mother and regain control of their lives. Amidst constantly shifting states of emergency, the three women are confronted again and again with the question of how to find their way back to each other, and of what it will cost them.

Told across three separate perspectives with an elliptical narrative structure, AND THE LIVING IS portrays the struggle of a mother and her two daughters with the uncontrollable non-rational, as well as their separate journeys away from fear.

Has a shyness that could be perceived as arrogant / bold in her outwardly appearance (coloured hair / tattoos / piercings) / quiet, observant, and emotionally sensitive / strong sense of justice.

Enya longs for connection with her fractured family while keeping herself at a distance from it. Used to be the kid with no needs in the family - the easy-going one you could rely on to have no problems. She’s learnt not to show her feelings or to voice her opinion if it threatens to cause disruption or stress to other people.

At sixteen she went through great lengths to get out of a deeply toxic co-dependent relationship with her mother. She now holds on to strong boundaries and is quick to defend herself, hiding behind the firm conviction that she owes Joan nothing, while quietly believing that pulling away is what caused her mother’s breakdown.
