DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
When am I going to get a chance to live my life? And have I left it too late?
If you've never asked yourself those questions, this film isn't for you.
But if you have - if you've asked it quietly, in the dark, where no-one could hear - then you already know what 'The Contract' is about.
A devoted mother makes a deal to save what mattered most - and spends the next twenty years in a job she's come to hate. When she finally tries to resign, her powerful boss reveals what's in the small print of her contract.
She got exactly what she wanted. She just didn't know what she was giving up.
Now she wants her life back.
I know this story because I've watched someone live it.
My wife Andrea spent years making space for everyone else's life - including mine. While the kids were growing she held everything, and everyone, together. Quietly. Without complaint. The canvases waited.
This film is my attempt to honour her sacrifice.
Because Andrea's question - when do I get to live my life - is one of the bravest, most terrifying questions a person can ask. And most women like her never ask it out loud.
'The Contract' gives them permission to.
It's for every woman in her fifties who chose everyone else first. Every frustrated artist who buried her dreams so deeply she's not sure she can find them anymore. Every woman who built a life that works for everyone — except her.
It's not too late. But the clock is ticking.
