MAGGIE

Lead Role (early 20s)

Character Description:

Maggie (approx. 20 years old) — A young woman from an impoverished background. She lives with her brother, Louis (18–19), who is a wheelchair user, and her mother (40–45). Maggie is under the total psychological control of her mother, who blames her for all their misfortunes. Her mother’s sole objective is to marry Maggie off to a wealthy man who will cover all their family expenses.

Maggie is intelligent, modest, and at times shy. She is easily led: initially by her mother, and later by Arthur. Having never known her father, who left the family when she was a child, she deeply feels the absence of a father figure—a role that Arthur eventually fills for her.

Physically, Maggie appears quiet, compliant, and fragile. She is deeply caring and constantly strives to please her mother and brother, often at her own expense. Her character arc is primarily internal: she desperately yearns to be noticed and loved. Upon receiving love and protection from Arthur, she responds with absolute, mutual love and becomes capable of significant, bold actions.
