Following the success of last summer’s “The Tempest,” award-winning Immersion Theatre are thrilled to be reviving their acclaimed, adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet for an Open-Air tour this summer.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Our Shakespeare productions have developed a reputation with venues and audiences for being high quality, extremely accessible, and incredibly fun. The text is edited down to approximately 95 minutes with a small, multi-rolling cast bringing the story to life in a high-energy, larger-than-life manner. Accessibility and a sense of fun are at the heart of every show we produce, with audience interaction being a big part of what audiences have come to expect and love. We absolutely honour the text, language, and play the truth of the story, however, we equally love leaning into the comedy and farcical nature of certain scenes. As such, we are looking for hugely playful performers with a willingness to give larger-than-life performances, unafraid to chop and play with the text to create a show of two halves for audiences of all ages: a truly mischievous, laugh-out-loud, raucous act one, and a devastating, poignant act two. We’ve produced this show multiple times so know how well it works and goes down with audiences when the larger-than-life nature is fully embraced!

ABOUT THE TOUR

Outdoor touring is immensely fun though tremendously hard work. Our productions are extremely physical and high energy so strong physical and vocal stamina is absolutely vital, as is the willingness and ability to deliver huge, larger-than-life performances, often involving audience participation.

The majority of rehearsals take place in London. The final two rehearsal dates take place in Bedfordshire for which accommodation (hotel) and travel are provided and paid for by Immersion Theatre.

On tour, Immersion Theatre provide and pay for hotel accommodation and transport. Transport consists of a long-wheeled transit van and a small car. These are hire vehicles and so drivers must have a full, clean licence which they have held for over 12 months. Please specify if you are happy to drive the car, van, or both and please only say van if you are genuinely confident in doing so. To reiterate, all applicants must be confident drivers and have a full, clean driving license which they have held for over 12 months.

As mentioned above, outdoor touring is extremely challenging both, physically and vocally, as we use shotgun mics so the ability to project throughout the entire performance and an understanding of how to do so safely is essential. Some shows will be performed in the blistering heat, others in the pouring rain; we carry on regardless of weather. Depending on your outlook, this can be brilliant fun: A fantastic way to see the country, catch some sun (or rain!), perform to thousands of excited families over the summer and come back with many an anecdote, or it can be an incredibly challenging and trying experience. Please think carefully if this is for you. Does the thought of arriving to a venue on a dull, rainy day, setting up the stage which consists of 8x4 lite deck and flattage – which you may sometimes need to safely carry a short distance to the performance space - in your water proofs (provided and paid for by Immersion Theatre), performing a high-energy show which requires vocal stamina when projecting to ensure you can be heard, and then doing a get out / loading the van in this weather fill you with dread? Do the touring duties - which include light costume/prop maintenance (if necessary), stage management, and get-ins / get-outs - make performing the show worthwhile?

We’ve always been honest and will continue to be transparent about the challenges of outdoor touring; It’s incredibly hard work. A desire to do the show alone should not be the reason you apply as the ins, outs, and travel are as much a part of the job as performing the show. That said, depending on your outlook, it can be enormously fun and rewarding as last year’s phenomenal Twelfth Night company can attest to! You will play some of the most stunning locations in the UK to wildly excitable audiences, see beautiful parts of the country, and have many a great day/night out with the team. As producers, we are on hand 24/7. We have toured with the majority of these summer tours so understand firsthand what is involved and required. Should an issue arise, we are always on the end of the phone and you will never be left to your own devices. We adore outdoor touring and passionately believe that you get out what you put in, an outlook held by a great deal of performers we work with continually across all our work. We simply want to be clear and ensure performers seriously consider the challenges before applying as we understand and respect that this kind of touring isn't for everyone. That said, if this is for you then we look forward to meeting you!
