Taking Your Own Professional Headshots

Taking Your Own Professional Headshots

A step-by-step guide to shooting casting-ready headshots at home, no studio required.

A professional headshot is one of the most important tools in any actor's kit — it's the first thing a casting director sees, and it can decide whether you get the audition at all. Hiring a specialist photographer is ideal, but it isn't always possible. The good news is that you can take your own professional headshots at home with a little planning, the right kit, and some patience. Here's how to do it properly.

Why Your Headshot Matters

Your headshot needs to look like you on your best, most natural day — not a glamour shot, and not a holiday snap. Casting directors use it to picture you in a role, so the focus should sit firmly on your face, your eyes, and your expression. Get this right and a self-shot headshot can hold its own.

Gather Your Equipment

The first step is to gather the kit you'll need. None of it has to be expensive:

  • A digital camera with a self-timer (a modern smartphone works well too)
  • A tripod to keep the camera steady and level. No tripod? Prop the camera on a stack of books or a chair.
  • A plain backdrop in a neutral colour
  • A light source, such as a large window or a lamp

A remote shutter or your phone's timer means you won't have to keep dashing back and forth between shots.

Set Up Your Space

Once you've gathered everything, set up your space. Choose a room with plenty of natural light and a clean, uncluttered background. Hang your backdrop behind you and position the camera on the tripod at roughly eye level.

Lighting

Lighting makes or breaks a headshot. Position your light source in front of you so it falls evenly across your face, avoiding harsh shadows under the eyes and chin. Soft, diffused daylight from a window is flattering and free — face towards it rather than having it behind you, which would leave you in silhouette.

Framing

Stand or sit so you're centred in the frame, with the shot composed from roughly mid-chest up. Keep the focus on your eyes. Leave a little space around your head so you have room to crop later.

Take the Photo

Now for the shoot itself. Look directly into the lens, relax your shoulders, and check that your face is evenly lit. Set the timer and take plenty of shots, varying your expression between takes — from a warm, open smile to a more neutral, thoughtful look. Casting directors often want options, so a range pays off.

Your face is the star of the shot, so it's worth getting your grooming right before you start. Our guide on how to do makeup for headshots and self-tapes walks through keeping things natural and camera-ready.

Edit the Photo

Once you've shot a good selection, it's time to edit. Use a photo-editing program to fine-tune the brightness, contrast, and colour, and crop the image to a standard headshot ratio. Keep retouching subtle — clean up distractions, but resist the urge to smooth away everything that makes you recognisable. A headshot that looks nothing like you in the audition room does more harm than good.

Print or Upload the Photo

Finally, prepare your finished headshot for use. If you need a physical copy, print it on high-quality paper or use a professional printing service for the best results. More often, though, you'll be uploading it to casting platforms — so save a high-resolution digital version too. Add it to your free Casting Callback profile so casting directors can find you the moment you're submission-ready.

When to Book a Professional

Taking your own headshots is a great way to get started and to keep your images fresh between shoots. As your career builds, though, it's worth investing in a session with a specialist. If you decide to go that route, see our rundown of top actor headshot photographers to find the right fit.
